Chart of every eclipse from 2018 to 2031, year by year: pairs of solar and lunar eclipses in bands that slide about 19 days earlier each year as the Sun meets the Moon's nodes

In brief

Santos Bonacci teaches the Moon's month, the Moon in the body and how to predict eclipses from the Moon's nodes. His method holds: eclipses come in seasons when the Sun meets the nodes, about six months apart and some 19 days earlier each year, and his 60 dark hours at new moon is a fair typical figure. His rules of thumb are a little too tight — a year can have up to five solar eclipses and seven in all, runs can go solar–lunar–solar, and the nodes take 18.6 years, not months, to go round. His teaching on the Moon and the body is tradition and experience, untested by sign; a Moon diary is the way to try it.

2–5 eclipses of the Sun every year — not two at most 2029 will have four; 1935 had five.
7 eclipses in 1982 — the most a year can hold; 2038 will have seven too
18.6 years for the Moon's nodes to go once round — about 18.6 months in each sign The likely source of his “18 months”.
19 days how much earlier the eclipse seasons come each year An eclipse year — the Sun back at the same node — is 346.6 days.

Full, new — and thirteen?

The Moon's month

On the eve of the Hunter's Moon of October 2023, live with a yoga teacher, Santos Bonacci drew the month on his whiteboard. “The full moon is always opposite the Sun, always. The new moon is when the Sun and the Moon are together. So every 14 days we have full moon, new moon, full moon, new moon, and this goes on forever.” At the new moon the two are married — “in astrology we call that a conjunction” — and at the full moon the Moon “is working against the Sun”, energising it by opposition. The Harvest Moon comes at the September equinox and the Hunter's Moon after it; that year's came late, with the Sun already in Scorpio and the full Moon in Taurus. In his eclipse talk he adds that the Moon travels 13° a day — “lucky number 13” — while the Sun moves one.

Left, the Moon round the Earth with sunlight from the right: new moon labelled a conjunction, full moon an opposition. Right, bars for 12 signs, 13 months of 28 days, 12.37 lunar months and 13.37 laps of the zodiac, and the 13 full moons of 2026
The Moon's month. Santos's teaching — new moon with the Sun, full moon opposite, every fortnight — and his thirteen months of 28 days beside the Sun's year and the two kinds of lunar month.
