Judith Hill: the planets of depression

Three cards for Judith Hill's planets of depression — Saturn cold and dry, the south node letting go, Neptune cold and moist — above a line running from the Saturnian to the Neptunian extreme

In brief

Judith Hill reads long-lasting depression in the birth chart through three “planets”: Saturn's cold, dry gloom, the south node's letting go and Neptune's cold, moist longing to escape — and through a “cosmic light deficiency” in people born in winter, at the dark of the Moon or at night. Some of her history holds: Galen did sort melancholy into three kinds, and dysthymia was his word. But dysthymia is not the commonest depression, the chart signs are untested, and season of birth explained almost nothing in 72,370 people. Light does lift mood in trials, but it is today's light, not the light at birth. Depression is a medical condition: anyone struggling should see a doctor or counsellor.

3 planets of depression in Judith Hill's teaching: Saturn, the south node and Neptune
16.6% of US adults have had major depression in their lives, against 2.5% for dysthymia National Comorbidity Survey Replication — dysthymia is not “our main type”.
72,370 older Europeans in whom season and month of birth explained almost none of the variation in depression or anxiety
≤1% of the variation in behaviour explained by the Moon's phase, across 37 studies of “lunacy”

The saturnine chart

Saturn: the cold, dry depression

Judith Hill begins with the planet everyone expects: our word “saturnine” still carries the idea of Saturn as the bringer of gloomy states. Saturn is the most astringent planet. He pulls energy inward and presses out fluid, and the more he presses the harder he gets, “like a piece of granite”. His colour ray is dark violet in Jyotish, she says, and black or dark blue in the West — the absence of light, fitting for the planet opposite the Sun, which rules the signs opposite the Sun's. A saturnine chart has Saturn on an angle, usually the 1st or 10th house; closely conjunct the Sun or Moon, or afflicting them by square or opposition; or many planets in Capricorn or Aquarius. Such people lack moisture: “they need love, they need affection”.

Three cards: Saturn, cold and dry, astringent, needing love and affection; the south node, letting go, worst with Jupiter or Venus on it; Neptune, cold and moist, born tired and longing to escape. Below, a line from the Saturnian to the Neptunian extreme, either of which she says can bring on dysthymia
The planets of depression. Judith Hill's three signatures of long-lasting low mood — Saturn, the south node and Neptune — and the cold-dry and cold-moist extremes between them.
