Judith Hill: the signs in the body
Judith Hill teaches that your Sun sign marks the zone of the body where your “vital force” is lodged — Aries the head, Leo the heart, Pisces the feet — and that each sign has a syndrome of strengths and weak points, reaching to the sign opposite and the signs it cannot “see”. Her zodiac man is the ancient one, much enlarged with organs and functions of her own; it rests on decades of practice, is untested in trials, and the largest study of Sun signs and illness, of 10.7 million people, found no link that held. Read it as a map for paying attention, never as a diagnosis: tiredness, sleepiness and blood pressure need a doctor whatever your sign.

Judith Hill: putting astrology to the test
Judith Hill is one of the few astrologers who set out to prove astrology rather than simply practise it, and she deserves credit for it: she studied red hair and Mars, earthquakes and Sun signs, and took a skeptics' challenge. On the record her results are hard to judge — the only trace of her perfect five-of-five test is her own biography, and her studies were either never published or never repeated by independent researchers. The best-controlled tests of chart matching have found astrologers at chance. Her rules for a fair test are good ones, and her hope of scoring 80% is a prediction that could be tested today.

Judith Hill: herbs, the heart and the bones
Judith Hill, medical astrologer and herbalist, matches herbs to planets by what they do — Mars heats, dries and kills, so cayenne and garlic are Martian — and reads the heart's vital force in the chart: plentiful in Aries and Leo, stored in Taurus, easily drained in Cancer and Pisces. Her bone herbs, from oat straw to red clover, are gentle but mostly untested, and her hope that we needn't get osteoporosis without a strong genetic cause is too bright: one in five American women over 50 has it, and genes shape everyone's bones. Her history of astrological medicine mostly holds, with some dates to correct, and her timing rules are tradition, untested in trials.
3 ways the vital force behaves by sign, as Judith Hill teaches it: a surplus in the fire signs, a store in Taurus and Scorpio, a drain in Cancer and Pisces

Judith Hill: the planets of depression
Judith Hill reads long-lasting depression in the birth chart through three “planets”: Saturn's cold, dry gloom, the south node's letting go and Neptune's cold, moist longing to escape — and through a “cosmic light deficiency” in people born in winter, at the dark of the Moon or at night. Some of her history holds: Galen did sort melancholy into three kinds, and dysthymia was his word. But dysthymia is not the commonest depression, the chart signs are untested, and season of birth explained almost nothing in 72,370 people. Light does lift mood in trials, but it is today's light, not the light at birth. Depression is a medical condition: anyone struggling should see a doctor or counsellor.

Judith Hill: crystals and cosmic rays
Judith Hill teaches upāya, the Indian system of planetary gem remedies: each planet's “cosmic colour ray” is held in a stone — ruby for the Sun, pearl for the Moon, blue sapphire for Saturn — and worn, with great care, to strengthen a weak planet in the birth chart. The pairings are a genuine tradition; the physics is not. A gem's colour comes from the light it absorbs, so it cannot store or send out a ray, and the cosmic rays of physics are particles from space. No clinical trial supports planetary gem therapy, and the controlled studies of crystals find nothing beyond placebo. Wear a stone you love — but never in place of diagnosis or treatment.

Judith Hill: Mars in the signs
Judith Hill reads Mars as the temper, and each sign loses it differently: Mars in Leo puts on a show, Mars in Virgo snaps when short of sleep, Mars in Scorpio waits years, Mars in Cancer fights like a wolverine for home. Her examples check out in the sky, but the temper styles are her practice, untested — and her darker links, to suicide and abuse, are no risk signs. Her geometry of the quincunx holds: signs five apart share nothing, and Ptolemy called them alien. Only its title as the traditional health aspect needs correcting — the 150° aspect dates from Kepler, in 1604; the old health link runs through the houses.

Judith Hill: her life and craft
Judith Hill was shown her first charts on her father's knee at three, gave her first paid reading at 14 and has practised for more than five decades; in six talks she tells her story, how she works with a client — “I never predict” — and the history of astrological medicine. Her sky is exact: all 13 clock times she gave for a week in July 2022 match our ephemeris to the minute. Some of her history isn't — the Hippocrates quotation and the “exams until 1666” aren't in the record, and the Ramesses V tomb shows star clocks, not the zodiac — and her case studies are stories rather than tests, told with the right rule: back to the doctor.

Judith Hill: time matters
Judith Hill has practised medical astrology since 1983 and founded the Academy for Astrological Medicine. Her message to herbalists is that time matters: when a herb is planted, picked, prepared and given can be chosen by the Moon. Her history mostly holds, with corrections — the surgery rule she credits to Ptolemy first appears in a 10th-century commentary, and Alan Leo was fined, never jailed. Her timing methods are tradition and practice, untested in trials, and the best-known controlled tests of astrology have found astrologers at chance.
