Medical astrologer Judith Hill on the Astrology Hub podcast: the Indian system of planetary gem remedies, the “cosmic colour ray” of each planet and what each stone is for — checked against gemmology, physics and the trials.

In brief
Judith Hill teaches upāya, the Indian system of planetary gem remedies: each planet's “cosmic colour ray” is held in a stone — ruby for the Sun, pearl for the Moon, blue sapphire for Saturn — and worn, with great care, to strengthen a weak planet in the birth chart. The pairings are a genuine tradition; the physics is not. A gem's colour comes from the light it absorbs, so it cannot store or send out a ray, and the cosmic rays of physics are particles from space. No clinical trial supports planetary gem therapy, and the controlled studies of crystals find nothing beyond placebo. Wear a stone you love — but never in place of diagnosis or treatment.

Upāya: a planet's ray, held in a stone
Gems as planetary antidotes
For years, Judith Hill says, the gem lore she met as a medical astrologer was “never right enough for me”: turquoise is good for this, wear that for a broken heart, a stone for each Sun sign. Then she found a complete system from India — upāya, “planetary antidotes for problems you have in your birth chart”. Each planet is given a gem, and the gem is held to “capture and permanently project the cosmic colour ray” of that planet. If you need the planet, you wear its stone, put on for the first time on a chosen day and worn on a chosen finger. She studied every system of upāya she could find, compared them in one of her books, and believes she “probably taught the first classes in America”.
