The seven planets round a circle in the old order — Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon — joined by a seven-pointed star that gives the order of the days of the week, beside a table of the day names in English, Latin and Italian

In brief

Santos Bonacci teaches that language is a spell: the alphabet is one long word, its letters carry numbers, and our words for days, months and gods carry the sky. Some of his word origins hold beautifully — month and Monday are the Moon's, the seven days are the seven planets, cardinal comes from the Latin for a hinge and Adam from the red earth. Many others are sound-alikes the dictionaries don't support: Jesus isn't “yes”, hour isn't Horus and planet means “wanderer”, not “plain” — though the real histories often carry the sky too.

7 days of the week, one for each of the seven visible planets — and the order of the days follows from the old order of the planets that Santos teaches
7 of 20 word origins Santos gives that the dictionaries confirm; 2 more hold in part, and 11 are sound-alikes Month, Monday, cardinal, Adam, seminary, Thomas and Bethlehem hold.
& the “27th letter” he remembers: printed after Z in old schoolbooks and read “and per se and” — hence ampersand
1 root behind both hour and year: *yer-, “season”. Horus is unrelated — but the seasons are in the words

The alphabet is a word

Language as a spell

Santos Bonacci opens this lesson from his weekly school with Big Bird. On Sesame Street the big yellow bird sings the alphabet as if it were one long word and wonders what it means — and Santos takes him seriously. “It is a spell,” he says. “It is the way nature creates the universe through words.” Inside Big Bird's song he hears “Christo vix”, Christ victorious; inside abracadabra he hears Abba, the father, and cadaver, the corpse. The alphabet is a curse, because “we have fallen abracadabra into this spell of words”, and a blessing, because it is “knowledge that will set you free”.
